Dear Sirs, in Italy is very much felt the need, in a part of some racecourses and equestrian centers, to eliminate the manure (straw and wood shavings) and transform in salable vermicompost. I would like to know if you are able to give me some information about it and if you know if this system is already used in come north America racecourses, or direct me to whom can help me on that. Many thanks for your assistance. Best regards Paola Mariani -- Paola Mariani PIANETA CAVALLO SRL Via Lampugnano, 99 20151 Milano ITALY T +39-02-33490249 F +39-02-33490235

There are racetracks and larger scale equestrian facilities in parts of the United States that contract with local mushroom farms/producers to have their manure hauled off site. The mushroom companies have fairly strict requirements, specifically most will only accept manure with straw bedding (no wood shavings), and the stall waste must consist of manure and bedding only, and be free of trash and other objects. Composting can also be done on site or perhaps it is possible to locate and haul the manure to a composting facility. Information on composting is available on the eXtension Horses website (http://www.extension.org/horses). Search using the terms Horse Manure Management and/or Composting (http://www.extension.org/pages/25674/horse-manure-management#.U3Dn_E1OXIU). You may wish to contact a few of the American racetracks for ideas concerning manure storage and removal. It may also be helpful to communicate with equine/animal science faculty at the University of Milan regarding manure management strategies and systems.
