I have these tiny mounds ... #179872

Asked May 07, 2014, 3:58 PM EDT

I have these tiny mounds of soil popping up in my lawn. They look too small to be from an animal and there is no sign of digging. I think they are from an insect but can't see any insects/worms/etc in the area. Do you know what could be doing this and how to eliminate it? Thanks. Dave

Hi,
I don't know if you tried to attach a photo, but what is here is not a picture of your lawn.

Check out this link from the U. Do any of these look like what you're seeing in your yard? http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/turf/holes.html

Please let me know if I can be of any additional help.

No, none of those look like the same issue.  There is no hole, just a small clump of dirt.  I will try to attach the pictures again.

Clearly that didn't work. I will resave the pictures and try again.

I found the problem, the pictures were 7.9 MB. Now they should fit.

I believe this is the work of earthworms. And while it does not damage the soil or lawn, it can be unsightly (and sort of high on the yuck scale). Here's what the U says about dealing with earthworms and their castings: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/lawn-and-turf-insects/generalist-feeders/
