Holes in laurel bark - pest or infection? #179754

Asked May 07, 2014, 10:18 AM EDT

I have an older laurel which has rings of holes in the trunk at various points and I'm concerned that we are going to lose it. What can be done and do I need to be concerned about it spreading? Holes in photograph are of about 1/8-1/4 inch diameter. Help!

Thank you for your question to Ask an Expert.

The holes in the trunk of your tree look like damage from sap sucker birds.  This damage can disrupt the flow of sap in the tree and can lead to die back of the tree above the holes.

Here is a publication that explains more about the birds and what you can do about it: http://www.uaex.edu/publications/pdf/FSA-7561.pdf
