Austrian Pine Problem #177885

Asked April 28, 2014, 5:45 PM EDT

Most of my five Austrian Pine trees have turned brown and the brown is going from the tip of the needle back to the stem.  The problem is more prevalent at the crown.  What am I up against?  George Hoos

Expert Response

Dear Mr. Hoos,Thank you for your question and for including the informative photos of your problem. There are a variety of possibilities for what may be going on, so I am including a number of links to websites for you to look at and consider. This link discusses needle browing of evergreens;  http://www.ext.colostate.edu/ptlk/2123.html
And this site contains a very informative list of all the problems http://www.hpj.com/archives/2011/oct11/oct31/1020Ridlen.cfm

In the most recent edition of Colorado Gardener, Kelly Grummons answered a similar question to yours. He felt recent cold, drought and stress had a large effect recently on Austrian pines. You can read his answer here on page 24.

I would suggest that you consider either talking to a liscensed arborist, nursery or bring a sample in to the extension. This is a link to the International Society of Arboriculture, which should have a list of local arborist: www.isa-arbor.comIn addition, you may always bring in a sample from one of your trees to the Boulder County Extension at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. It's the Natural Resources Building. It's open 8 am-4 pm weekdays. They will have you fill out a form asking a variety of questions, including location, watering, fertilization, and much more. The sample should be at least 18" long and include both affected and unaffected tissue. I hope this information proves helpful. Sincerely,Shelley Goddard
