Neglected Lawn is Half Weed #177551
Asked April 27, 2014, 3:17 PM EDT
We bought our house a few months ago and would like to have turf in the back. My back yard is about half weed, with the other half patchy bluegrass and some bare spots. Plus, there used to be a garden bed but this is now a bare spot that's being taken over by weeds and veggies.
Can this lawn be saved by killing weeds and overseeding, or do we have to start over with sod?

One way you could proceed is to aerate the lawn thoroughly (in two directions)and over seed following that. You must have good seed -soil contact to get a good and healthy stand of tufgrasses.
You could also start over, but this wouldn't require sod. See this fact sheet on renovating your lawn which contains the details of how to proceed.
