Trimming Mondo Grass #176951

Asked April 24, 2014, 4:18 PM EDT

Hi, is it too late in the Dallas area to trim back Mondo grass (not dwarf, not Liriope), or will it take a while to fill in and recover from it's sheared look?  Thanks, Kathy

groundcover. One of the easiest to grow in our area is Mondo or monkey grass (Ophiopogon japonicus). It is a different texture and color from St. Augustine and also comes in variegated. It also can be walked on and does not require trimming or mowing. I have seen an entire front yard in Mondo grass and it looked very nice.

So many of the stands of Mondo I have seen this year were severely burned in the cold.  Clients are wanting to trim, remove, or replace it.  I have been telling them it will soon recover on its own....but the  scorched look is bothering them a lot.  Trim or don't trim---especially in Mid May----early Spring seems reasonable, but now now, huh?

You are right- What I have read says to trim in early spring- but, if you are willing you might go ahead and hand trim it back. Look for the new growth- Regardless, it will allow new growth to push forward and you will not have to look at the dead portion of the grass. You mentioned that your clients might be willing to replace it- You might suggest they give this a try first.I hope this information helps youHarriet Maclay
