What are the steps to sta... #176701

What are the steps to starting a raised bed vegetable garden in Maple Grove? I planned on using 2"x8" boards for support. My questions are: -Should I cut out the grass underneath? -Should I put in a barrier between the grass and/or exisiting soil and my new soil? -What should I bring in to fill the bed? -Do I need to till the new "soil" into the existing soil? -If so, would I do this before putting the 2x8s up? -Should I tamp the new material down? -How full should the box be? Any answers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help! Greg

It would be best to remove the sod then build your bed.  Add four to six inches of finished compost, peat moss, or well-rotted manure to the existing area, and thoroughly till it into the underlying soil (or till into soil you have added tr raise the soil to the level desired, usually about two inches from the top).  I have attached two links to more information on raised beds. I hope all the information doesn’t overwhelm you. It only costs $17 and is well worth the money and effort. Here is the link for instructions:http://soiltest.cfans.umn.edu/ Good luck with your new garden.
