insect identification #175224

Asked April 15, 2014, 2:47 PM EDT

Hi, I was wondering if you could identify the insect in the picture for me? I've seen them in several gardens around multnomah county and have even seen them around my radishes. I'm pretty certain they are eating the roots...how can I get rid of them? Thank you!

Multnomah County Oregon

Expert Response

This is a millipede. They feed mostly on rotting leaves and other organic material but will occasionally damage tender young seedlings as well. They are not usually controlled because the damage is so minor unless the population is very high. In this case there are a number of garden insecticides that can be used.
