We have grape vines with posts treated with cca 8' apart with grapes planted in the center 4' from each post. Are the grapes useable or should the post be removed.
Marshall County Indiana
The main concern with CCA treated posts is potential contamination of groundwater due to leaching of copper, chromium, and arsenic. The rate at which these chemicals leach through the soil depends greatly on soil type and rainfall. Studies have shown leaching occurs immediately around the posts and below which increases slowly over time. CCA posts have been used for several years and are still present in vineyards without causing problems with grape or wine quality. If you are concerned about the posts, you may replace them with metal or other posts, although this could be done over time. As for the grapes they should be perfectly fine with the current posts.
