A pea teepee in Klamath Falls #169502

Asked March 10, 2014, 1:58 PM EDT

Hello! I would like to use climbing peas to create a teepee for my kids to play in this summer. I would love to have harvestable peas or flowers too, but mostly I am concerned with getting good height on the growth given the short growing season up here. My questions are: what kind of peas would you recommend? Scarlet Runner Beans? And when can I plant? The ground is already un-frozen, but I am worried about a late freeze. I am new to the area but I have heard lots of stories about snow in May and even June! Thanks so much, Emma

Expert Response

Try Austrian Winter Peas or another cold-hardy pea if you are concerned about freezing.  Otherwise, hold off planting until early June.  You should still have ample time to produce a nice teepee and harvest some edible peas by the first fall frost.
