Over wintering Aspen saplings #167808
Asked February 23, 2014, 4:14 PM EST
Greetings! My mom brought me three tiny Aspen saplings late last fall, as they were going into dormancy. Since we were having such a cold winter, I've been keeping them inside, next to a north facing sliding glass door, and have been occasionally watering them. They are not in large containers. A couple of weeks ago, they started growing green leaves and growing! Now I'm afraid I've goofed up by keeping them inside. How should I handle them?

Hi Monica -
The warm temperature of your house has caused them to come out of winter dormancy much earlier than normal. Keep them inside until you can plant them outside without any risk of frost, which would be the end of May in Denver. Since they have unhardened already, they are susceptible to cold temperatures and should not be brought outside now.
