Hi: I have a Friendly Aquaponics (Hawaii) Micro System Manual that recommends we ask our local Extension Agent what fish are legal to grow in Aquaponics systems (I plan on building a home system with 64 sq feet of plant grow area, which will require 20# of live fish. Also, do you know of any aquaponics growers in the Eugene/Southern Willamette Valley area who are up and running? Any recommended sources for fingerlings? Any info you can provide would be helpful.

Interest in home aquaponics systems is growing rapidly in Oregon, especially in the Willamette Valley, where so many people are conscientious about eating and going local foods. Your questions are a great pl;ace to start.
Many fish are legal to grow for personal consumption (not for sale) in small aquaponics systems. Some likely candidate species for aquaponics systems include tilapia, catfish, trout, and bullheads. Transport permits are required by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to bring them to your facility. These are easy to obtain online; licensed fingerling sellers in Oregon will usually get the transport permit for your purchase from them. You will notice that Greenhill Gardens in Eugene is listed as a licensed fish dealer.
A good contact for you to have for fingerling sources and other fish culture questions is the Oregon Aquaculture Association, whose current secretary is Kathy Bridges, at Santiam Valley Ranch, 503/743-2931.
You could also buy fingerlings from out-of-state, but this requires an additional fish health permit, which makes it more complicated. For more information on the ODFW requirements for buying out-of-state fingerlings, contact Guy Chilton at ODFW, 503/947-6249.
