When to prune knockout roses in East Texas #162871
Asked December 27, 2013, 11:16 AM EST
We live in Lufkin and planted knockout roses last year. They have done well, but I understand that they need to be pruned. I am not a rose gardener, hence the choice of knockouts. In this area when would be the best time to prune, and what is the best method?
Angelina County Texas
Expert Response
I recommend pruning all roses February 14 or after. If you are in southeast Texas, you can prune sooner.
Pruning stimulates new growth. This new growth is easily killed by a late freeze and sometimes destroys the good wood and therefore you have to prune again.
