Holes in my yard #161952

Asked December 08, 2013, 4:32 PM EST

I have several golf ball size holes in my yard. There is no mound or dirt residue at the entrance of the holes, like crawfish make. They appear to be 18 to 24 inches deep. When I fill a hole with water, the water also comes out af a connecting hole a couple if feet away. The holes aren't easily seen because of the grass (mowed lawn) coverage. I can feel them when I step on one. Recently several of these holes have appeared at the base of my home foundation & sidewalk & angle under the house / sidewalk. When it rains they fill with water & are becoming larger at the entrance because the water erosion. I have asked neighbors & locally & no one knows what is making the holes. Thanks, Joseph

Expert Response

This is a little difficult with no other symptoms being observed.  Crawfish will not always make a chimney when they form their entry ways.  Moles may be the culpret if this is being seen since the rains have started.  They will form entry ways when soil profile becomes saturated.  Are you seeing any other surface runs that moles will typically form? An insecticide will take care of the insects that the moles are feeding on and crawfish are susceptable to insecticides also.
