Can you identify this plant? #160003

Asked November 09, 2013, 7:33 PM EST

Can you identify this plant? I live in Columbia, Maryland. In April these flowers completely covered the median of a major street. That median isn't mowed/landscaped; in the summer it's covered with tall brushy weeds, so this is some sort of bulb that seems to have naturalized. The color in the photos isn't distorted; the flowers are distinctly greenish. Foliage is straplike, like a daffodil. It looks sort of like a wild hyacinth, except for the "tube" structure in the center. Height of blooms and foliage about 18".

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

The plant in your photo looks like Star of Bethlehem, Ornithogalum nutans. There are several species. You can do a web search and view photos.
