common geraniums #159995

Asked November 09, 2013, 5:40 PM EST

On or about 10/29/13 I received a reply to a question. In that reply I was informed that there are two types of geraniums "True geranium and the Pelargonium. Can you tell me how I would tell the difference?

Hi,  True geranium are often called cranesbill and are perennial plants here in central Oregon. Here is a link showing several varieties of the genus Geranium common name cranesbill.  http://www.finegardening.com/plantguide/genus/geranium.aspx

Pelargonium are the very common or old-fashioned annuals that can be overwintered indoors here. They are also called zonal geraniums.  I've attached two pictures of this kind. You can also send a photo to me at the address below if you are needing a plant identified.

Thanks,
