Asparagus crowns can be divided in early spring. When the soil is dry enough to work, dig the asparagus root and use a sharp shovel to cut the roots crown in 1/2 or in 1/4 depending on the size of the crown. Then, replant the divided crowns according to the directions found at the website link below. You should not harvest from the divisions the first year since the plants need a year to become well established for spear production.

If you do not want to take the plant(s) out of production for a year, you might just buy new root crowns next spring and plant those leaving your existing stand.
