In March of 2012 I planted five 6' tall Nellie Steven hollies in a row. They are doing very well, however, last winter I believe birds got all the nice red berries. New berries came in this past spring, but they are still not red. Is it likely they will turn red later this fall/winter? How can I prevent losing the red berries in the future? Put some of the row cover netting over the bushes?

Expert Response
The berries on your holly trees should ripen as fall proceeds. It is acceptable for you to cover the shrubs with bird netting or tulle in order to deny the birds access to the berries.

thank you. what is tulle?
Tulle is commonly known as bridal veil material. It is a fine, mesh or net material that is sold by the yard in most fabric stores. Bird netting typically has a half-inch grid, while tulle has a much smaller grid, perhaps 1/8" Bird netting is typically black while tulle is sold in various colors.
