These apples are from our... #155939

Asked October 06, 2013, 7:37 PM EDT

These apples are from our golden delicious tree. We have lived here 25 years, and it was here when we bought the house. The quality of the apple is fine, very little worm damage. Apples are fine for cooking/freezing, etc. What is the problem with our apples and where can we get info on how to treat it? We would like to eliminate the black skins. Thanks so much! Lois & Bob

Expert Response

The apples have a summer disease called sooty mold or fly spot. The disease is the result of excessive rainfall in the summer months. This disease is more cosmetic than anything. You can trim the apple skin off and eat the apple. If you want to control the disease in the future, you woudl need to apply a series of fungicide treatments. A product that would work would be captan. Read more about summer diseases in the OSU Extension Bulletin 780, Controlling Disease and Insect in Home Fruit Plantings available from the Mahoning County Extension Office.
