5 yr old royal anne oozing sap #155757
Asked October 04, 2013, 7:55 PM EDT
I have a 5-yr old royal anne cherry tree about 5 inches diameter at base and 20 ft tall. It's never produced fruit, but does bloom; leaves look healthy. For a couple years it's been oozing sap about 4 fit up the trunk. there's no sawdust in the sap... it's clear. In addition to the sticky hunk of sap, a jelly like substance appears, not sticky like sap. What's should I do?

For the sap or ooz, that is just normnal when there has been a dispruption of the bark, a cut or pruning. The water pressure in the tree is causing the sap to ooz out of the tree.
Nothing can be done.
The sap is often clear; when it dries, it turns yellowy in color and hardens.
As for the jelly like material, bring a sample by the Lane County Extension office, 783 Grant Street, Eugene; M-Th 10-1 and 2-5 and we can take a look.
If the tree blooms and no cherries, the tree needs a variety called Sam or Van orRainier other pollinating type tree. Royal anne's need a pollenizer.
