I have a pine tree which had the top turn yellow on me and asked a question and was given the advice to take off that portion and let another branch become the leader. This has worked nicely but now I'm seeing more death / yellowing on the lower branches and ends of some of the others. Is it inevitable? If so I think I'd like to say goodbye before the winter. If not what might you suggest? Photo attached.

Expert Response

We can't be sure what's causing the dieback from looking at a photo, but the damage we can see resembles a disease called tip blight.

Please read the information in the following bulletin carefully and see whether your tree's condition is consistent with what's described there.  Although the information in the bulletin was published for Indiana residents, most of it also applies to Minnesota.

Minnesota's recent extended droughts have undoubtedly increased the incidence of tip blight.
