Post Oak Trees Dying- Please help!!! #154178

Asked September 24, 2013, 12:32 PM EDT

Hello,

I am having trouble figuring out why my Post Oak Trees are dying in mass.  Although I could make a few educated guesses, such as we had a severe drought, which lead to fungal attacks, which then lead to borer damage and due to the sensitivity of Post Oaks, death is enviable... However I would like for a professional to take a look and hope to make a more accurate diagnosis.  It starts out as a black tar-like substance  oozing from the truck of the tree, and then complete defoliation followed by the bark falling off. I can not really put a time period between the black ooze and then defoliation on it since it happens so quickly.  Although the symptoms point to sudden oak death, the literature states Post Oaks are resistant to the disease.  Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.  Thank you for your time!!!

Expert Response

The #1 cause of Post Oak tree mortality in recent years in hypoxolon canker. A quick internet serch will yield tons of information including photos. Now, hypoxolon canker is a secondary problem and in order for it to overcome the tree the tree itself must be under a certain amount of stress. You already mentioned the "drought of record" in 2011. Couple that with early frosts, late frosts and insect pressures it's a miracle any of the trees are still alive. If you are in Burleson County, Texas... give me a call and I would be happy to come and take a look.
