Identify shrub #151687

Asked September 08, 2013, 5:27 PM EDT

Can you tell me what this large shrub is? It's by the Engineering Bldg. on campus and it's coved with these fruits/

Ingham County Michigan

Expert Response

It looks like some kind of Aesculus or horse chestnut.  Since it is not flowering, there is no way to be more specific.  A guess is Aesculus x carnea or Aesculus parvaflora or A. pavia.

If you saw it bloom, go online and check on the names and see what they look like with flowers.

The bad news is that the Ask an Expert staff is not located on campus or even East Lansing.  We have no way of knowing what the landscaping is at MSU.

Thanks for responding!  Can you give me someone to contact on the MSU campus?
This is more like a shrub than a tree, and the photo was taken to, Sept. 8.
thanks,
Celeste

The horse chestnuts I listed can either be shrubs or small trees. Your picture is showing the fruit or seeds.  This probably bloomed in June.  I do not who on campus would know what is planted where.

Thank you very much.  I passed this info on to my son who sent me the pic from MSU.

Good luck...  The fruit shape is very reminiscent of Aesculus parvaflora or bottlebrush buckeye.  It would bloom with white flowers, usually in June.  Since there were no flowers...only leaves and fruit...it becomes a guessing game.
