Cherokee County Georgia

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting the Cherokee County UGA Extension Office and Master Gardeners, concerning removal of a Yellowjacket nest. If the entrance to the nest can be located, placing a large bowl tightly over the hole so the yellowjackets can not get out, will normally kill the nest within a few days.  There are several insecticides on the market aimed at Wasps and Hornets.  They generally come in containers that can project the insecticide spray a long distance.  The best time to use these sprays is at dusk when the insects are less active and preparing for nighttime. Care should be taken since the insects will be very aggressive around the nest.  If you do not feel comfortable with removing the nest, contact a local pest control or nuisance animal removal firm.  I have included a link to two UGA publications on stinging and biting insects and household insect pests that might help.  Please contact us if you have additional questions. http://www.caes.uga.edu/Publications/pubDetail.cfm?pk_id=6381 http://www.ent.uga.edu/pubs/homeipm.htm#wasps
