Expert Response

We really need to have a size on this guy.  There are over 30,000 beetles that have been identified in North America, ranging from 5 1/8” (tropical) to less than 1/16”. Some crawl on land; others fly or live in water. This beetle has many of the characteristics of a wood boring beetle, a cebrionid beetle, cadelle beetle, and ophonus melleti species beetle, and I’m sure many other beetles. Very difficult to determine without closer examination.

Was there any damage to the wood (holes, tunneling, etc)?  Was there only one beetle? Did the pallet of food come from a different part of the country?

If the landscape company needs a definite identification I suggest he send the beetle to the MSUE diagnostic lab. http://www.pestid.msu.edu/

Hope this was of some help. Please feel free to contact us again if you have further questions.
