Can a home in Minneapolis... #149986

Can a home in Minneapolis get a termite infestation? I have always heard it is too cold, but I have found a brown corner pile at the front interior of my house that look like the pictures of termite evidence. However, the pile is very sawdust-like, and does not have any pieces that look like fecal droppings.

Expert Response

Termites are present in Southern Minnesota but they are not common. Carpenter ants also eat wood. Please read the following sited and compare the pictures with the insects in your home.   http://blog.lib.umn.edu/efans/ygnews/2012/11/an-unusual-insect-found-in-min.html http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2092C.html http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/YGLNews/YGLN-Feb0101.html    For insect control indoors, consult your local pest control professional for sprays, dusts or baits to reduce the ant population.
