I have a young maple tree... #147479

Asked August 16, 2013, 11:38 AM EDT

I have a young maple tree in our yard that is missing roughly 30% of its leaves (they didn't drop, they just never sprouted in the spring. The bark appears to be unhealthy and separating in places from the trunk, and many of the remaining leaves have brown spots/holes in them. Some of the leaves appear to be changing color early (mid august now). I have given the tree no extra care, other than a mid-spring mulching around the base (I was careful to keep the trunk clear of mulch at ground level). I am attaching a photo. Any assistance is appreciated. I'm concerned that whatever is stressing this tree will eventually kill it. Thanks in advance!

Expert Response

Your tree has severe mechanical damage to the base of the tree, possibly caused by a lawnmower or weedwacker.  This is causing a lot of stress and early fall coloration.  You do not need to worry about the spots on the leaves.  It might be better to cut it down and start with a new tree, even one that is only a couple of feet tall.  If the tree has sentimental value, cut out the dead wood and keep it well watered in time of drought.  You might want to take a look at the following publication for advice on future pruning.
