Expert Response

Good day,

Although arborvitae can be pruned any time of the year, the best time is early spring before new growth starts.  Pruning at that time of year allows the new growth to mask any blunt cuts.

Don’t get too vigorous with pruning because if the remaining branches are all brown, they won’t grow again nor will they send out new sprouts.  This publication discusses pruning for various evergreen woody plants.  The information about arborvitae begins on page 3.  http://cmg.colostate.edu/gardennotes/618.pdf
