Are apricots that are ripe and split open edible? #145428

Asked August 05, 2013, 5:08 PM EDT

I have a bumper crop of apricots (in Basalt Colorado) but many of them are split open but do not appear to have any disease.  Can these be cooked and eaten?

Eagle County Colorado

Expert Response

As long as the fruit does not appear spoiled or damaged, it is safe to wash the apricots well under running water and use in cooking or eating.  The cause for the problem could be increased watering prior to harvest which can cause some fruits to bulge. Because the skin of the fruit cannot expand as fast, the fruit tends to split.  Hope this helps.  Thanks for using eXtension.
