Oak tree sap #142150

Asked July 21, 2013, 7:13 PM EDT

My red oak tree about three years old is leaking sap. The sap is coming out of two small holes on the lowest limb about five inches from the trunk. is their any way to treat this?  Should I cut off the branch at the trunk? I have included three pictures.
Thanks you for your help.

Expert Response

Not sure what has caused this, but could be from multiple things.  I don't see an issue with the whole tree; yes, just remove the limb and then paint the wound with pruning paint.

Thanks Larry,
I followed your advice and removed the limb. I sealed the cut with pruning seal. I have not seen any other damage or leaking of sap. Had to trim up other lower branches to balance out tree but it still looks good and now I think is also safe.
