Fig Tree Illnesses #142049

Asked July 21, 2013, 10:45 AM EDT

I cut away a large stem system because it had fuzz and white dots, and it wasn't producing like the rest of the tree. When I cut it, I found that 3/4 of the trunk was rotten. Is there something that I should do to treat the ill part, to prevent the rest of the tree from becoming infected?

Expert Response

Figs are a great fruiting plant for North Florida gardens.  I am not sure how large or old you plant is, but the damjaged trunk was probably injured due to cold damage at some point.  Damage portions should be removed.  The lichen growth that you show in the photo is nothing to be concerned about.  It is not damaging your fig tree in any way.  You can learn more about growing figs from the document found at the link below.  For more speciffic information, be sure to contact the Leon County Extension Service.  They can be reached atg: <personal data hidden>.  They are located at:  615 Paul Russell Road.  They have horticulturists and trained Master Gardener Volunteers ready to help with your gardening problems.  I hope you have a greatg gardening week.
