My aspen trees by my house in Evergreen are missing their tip. They curl in and look dry and brown in that area. They are falling off the tree now and are quite dry. There is some yellowish color along the stem near where the point would be. What could this be caused by?

Expert Response
This looks like leaf and shoot blight, caused by the fungus Venturia, which is a disease affecting young aspen and cottonwood tissue primarily in the mountains during the spring,

Sanitation is going to be your most effective control. Fall removal of infected leaves, twigs and branches can reduce the amount of disease the next spring. Shoot blight fungus overwinters in diseased stems and twigs, so it can be pruned out to reduce new infections.
