Only this Hrdrangea planted in a row with four other Hydrangea's which has droopy leaves. What action should be taken?

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

Normally a hydrangea with droopy leaves is reacting to high heat or a lack of water.
In the heat of summer, some hydrangeas droop during the day and look fine in the evening.  Given our weather of late though, it could be something else.
We would pull back the mulch from the crown/bark of the plant. (we would do this for all plants-you don't want mulch resting against bark)  Take a look at the bark for signs of damage.  Feel the soil. Is it overly wet or overly dry? Stick your finger or a screw driver down deeper and see if the condition of the soil.  It should be moist, but not terribly wet.  If it is, or if the plant's crown is too deep, you should lift the plant out and amend the soil with organic matter such as compost or leaf-gro and re-situate the plant.
Hopefully as weather conditions improve, so will your plantings.
