skyrocket oak issue #132995

Asked June 09, 2013, 12:59 PM EDT

I planted a skyrocket oak last fall. Came in just fine, went away for memorial day weeked and come home to the tree having brown spots here and there on the leaves, but located all over the tree as a whole. The spots are brown, look dry and appear to be dying. I love this tree, and don't want to lose it. Do you know what I am doing wrong? And can I save it?

Expert Response

This is a cultivar of English oak (Quercus robur). They are fairly insect and disease resistant. The spots could be due to insect feeding or possibly from a non-important fungal disease. Or they could be frost damage. A late frost can kill a few cells in the bud or in newly formed leaves. Those small areas then make spots or curled areas when the leaf gets bigger. Regardless, these are not serious problems. You tree will be ok. If the problem gets worse or comes back next year, contact me again.
