Dying Evergreen Tree #131056

Asked May 31, 2013, 9:18 AM EDT

We have a couple of trees that are looking sick. One has looked this way for several years. There is one other that is alos stating to look the same way. There was a sampling that grew up next to the trunk that I wondering if it could have been chocking the roots. I pulled it out a couple of summers ago, but this tree looks about the same or maybe a little worse. Just wondering what you suspect the problem might be. Thanks

Expert Response

The trees in the photographs appear to be Norway spruces.  Norway spruces are relatively disease free.  The last 4 to 5 years (weather-wise) have been difficult for many trees and shrubs.  Many parts of Iowa received above normal rainfall in 2009 and 2010.  Plants had to endure extreme heat and drought in 2012.  Because of the stressful weather conditions, some evergreens have declined in health over the last 12 to 18 months.

A plant specimen can be submitted to the ISU Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic if you wish to have the specimen checked for insect and disease problems.  Instructions for submitting plant specimens can be found at the following website.
