Asked May 27, 2013, 9:59 AM EDT

Planted red oak 1 yr ago. About 20 feet tall now. Just noticed brown on edges of leaves. I think it is not dry, but unsure what the issue is. I auto water about 10 inutes ech day.

If the problem only appear in about 5% of the entire tree, then just continue to monitor.  Often, we anticipate low levels of damage due to the environmental factors.

If leaf scorching symptoms are rampant, that is often a red flag that raises the question, why is the tree not getting sufficient water.  This can be due to many reason.  It take about a year for a tree to get established. Until it gets established it may exhibit some stresses on the plant.  Depending on your soil type, 10 min a day may be too much when coupled all the rains that the DFW area had been receiving this spring.  Alternatively, it may not be enough on hot dry day.
I would suggest getting a probe to see what the moisture situation is like about 12 inches below.  You want to have the soil moist, NOT wet.
There can be many other reason as to why you might see your tree not thriving.  I would suggest for you to contact your local Texas A&M AgriLife Extension county office in Ellis county (http://ellis.agrilife.org) and a Master Gardener volunteer may be available to help with locally based information.
