mesquite tree bark damage #129871

Asked May 26, 2013, 4:52 PM EDT

The bark on my Mesquite tree is pealing away.  I am assuming it is some kind of insect.  Do you know what kind of insect it may be and what I can use to get rid of them.

Expert Response

Hi,

Peeling bark is not necessarily a sign of insects.  Trees under environmental stress will shed bark.  It would be helpful to know what sort of watering schedule you are using and how the water is delivered to the roots.  Also if you had any significant work done around the tree that could have effects on the roots.  Please let me know more details or feel free to call my office and speak with our Master Gardener Volunteers.

Thank you very much for responding to my question.  I found out that they were "Piss" ants.  That is the common name, of course.  Very common, LOL.

Hi, That term in the insect world can refer to any ant. I hope your tree is okay. Peter

I'm using Seven dust.  Hopefully it will work.  Thank you Peter.
