wool eating moth outbreak #129361

Asked May 23, 2013, 4:05 PM EDT

What is the best way to eradicate a large moth outbreak on our farms lamb and llama wool storage? Currently infestation is in a large outbuilding which is also a pottery studio. Safest? Ways to save the wool? Thanks

Expert Response

The best approach would be to put wool in plastic bags then into a freezer. Once the storage area is empty clean and treat with a low toxicity, botanical insecticide (pyrethrum or one of the newer botanicals). After a few days in the freezer the wool can be returned to the now clean storage area (and hope that moths don't migrate in from surrounding areas. Post a follow up if you have questions.
