My brother posted a picture of a flower that "volunteered" in his yard in Portland, OR. We don't know what it is. Can you help identify it? He says it is a perennial that loves sun.

Your plant appears to be Crucianella stylosa - crosswort - in the Rubiaceae (Madder Family). This is a native of the Mediterranean area and is often cultivated as an ornamental.
