We have had this peach tree about 8 years.  Bore a wonderful set of peaches year before last - not a great volume, but quite large.
Last year was pretty good also.
But we see this split branches & very large, long damage area right to the inner wood - no normal, protective bark or layers of any kind, probably leading to the splitting shown in the attached photos.

I was inclined to wrap them with tree wrap at this time through the year, to try to give some protection.  I've read that normally it is not good to do this because of providing insect shelters.

But what other steps can we do to protect & provide where the cambrium miight grow back ?
Removing these affected branches with remove about 45% of the tree.

Thanks for any insights and/or suggestions.

Btw - my wife, a Master Gardener was fairly close acquaintance of Larry Sager's and was most sad to have him gone.  Our condolences to all of you as well.
