A friend attended a lecture (in Columbia) by one of your master gardeners who supposedly advised against buying any boxwoods this year due to a disease. Can you tell me if this is true and what disease is affecting new boxwoods? What should I do to protect my existing boxwoods?

Expert Response

Yes there is a new disease in Maryland that targets boxwood. It is called boxwood blight. Go to the following link for additional information, http://extension.umd.edu/learn/boxwood-blight  The best way to protect your existing boxwood is not to introduce new ones from the nursery or big box stores into your landscape.

If you have further questions go to our website, http://extension.umd.edu/hgic or call to speak to one of our horticulture consultants. They are available Mon-Fri from 8-1. The number in Maryland is<personal data hidden>.
