Emergency water supplies should be easily stored if you start out with a sanitary water source.  Hoping to store it for 1 to 2 years may not be possible, unless you freeze it.  If it is a city/community water supply, it should already have the chlorine or other treatment to make it sanitary.  Boiling the city water supply can remove the sanitizing treatment and make it vulnerable to bacterial and algal growth.  You can replace that protection, but you will need something stronger than lemon juice.  Acids like lemon juice or vinegar work best when we seal things up in a canning process.  many of our containers for emergency water storage do not provide the air tight seal needed with a mild acid treatment.  They are also organics that can provide a food source for the bacteria.  Be sure to store your water in a cool dark place.  Light can promote the growth of algae.

We have worked with our health and emergency communities to develop the best management practices for safely storing emergency water.  Here is the document that we developed: http://extension.missouri.edu/p/EMW1026.

Let me know if you have any questions.
