Ladylike bugs on hibiscus #117261

Asked March 13, 2013, 5:53 PM EDT

Are these bugs good or bad for my plants? Will they help with aphids and white flies?

Expert Response

I can not tell from the photo what type of insect it is. You said "ladybug-like".  If it appears exactly like lady bugs except for different coloration than the typical red with black spots ladybug then it is probably a ladybug.  There are many species in Hawaii. I am not aware of any that are detrimental to plants.  Ladybugs eat aphids, scale insects and mealybugs; some species are more voracious feeders than others on the various species of each of the above-mentioned "sucking insects."
If you don't think it is a ladybug then bring a few to your nearest Extenison Service Office.
