At a glance it looks like something in the beetle family (Coleoptera) to me but I'm not an entomologist. Where you found them in the house, what time of year they showed up, and any other details about their behavior may also help with identification.
Information for the Insect Diagnostic Lab at Cornell is here:

That page links to a list of factsheets that might enable you to identify the insects yourselves: http://entomology.cornell.edu/cals/entomology/extension/idl/idlfactsheetlist.cfm

Thank you Amy, for getting back to me so quickly.
They started showing up around December time frame.
They are in the living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom on occasion.
We do bring in a plant from outdoors around end of October.
Generally, they like to congregate around light fixtures. They usually crawl, and very rarely do we see them fly.
we have live and dead samples. Could we mail them to an entomologist for analysis?
They are quite small, about 2 to 3 mm long, 1 to 2 mm wide and 1 to 2 mm high.
Thanks again,
Peter

The Diagnostic Lab website has information about submitting samples (how to prepare and ship the sample and the fees they charge).
