The Best Time to Dethatche In Michigan 2021 #742114

I just purchased a dethatche device that is pulled behind my rider mower. But, after reading several online articles about the "correct" times to dethatche, I find the information too general. Being a Spartan, I will used the advice of experts at our school of agriculture. I believe that I have a mixed of grass but its predominantly Kentucky Blue Grass. When should I dethatche? Thanks.

Sweet Corn for 2021 #741923

My plan for 2021 sweet corn this year is to spray the field with glyphosate in early May, broadcast half the fertilizer based on soil test, disc the ground, plant the corn around the end of May/early June, wait to July after it's up and overspray the field with 2,4 D to get rid of the weeds and/or cultivate between the rows, then broadcast the remaining 50% fertilizer over the corn. What do you think about that strategy?

White Oak dying #741559

We have 4 white oaks in a row. All of them died 2 years ago. All at the same time. Now they are shedding their bark in huge pieces. Not sure if we can cut them down and use the wood of if the trees need to be destroyed. Branches are falling, but not big ones. Notices holes in the wood a few days ago.

Pruning oaks late March 2021 #741368

Being that spring seems to be quite ahead of schedule, I'm concerned that trimming the lower, smaller branches off the main trunk of mature white and red oaks this week. (Mar 29-April 4) Am I too late? Will sealing my cuts, which I usually don't do when they are high & hard to reach, be a guard against disease in this instance? Especially oak wilt, which has been active in my locale the past couple years.

Cicadas 2021 protecting small trees #741325

Just learning that 2021 is an emergence year for Brood X cicadas, mid-May-June. My property in south Farmington Hills (Oakland County) has several Japanese maples, (4 planted in 2020, the rest in 2017), paperbark maples, and Korean maples. The emergence in Michigan is expected to be in the Ann Arbor area (Washtenaw County). Should I tent and/or spray my trees to protect them from cicada damage? Thank you.

Raised bed and flower pot planting #740974

I purchased a raised bed which ends up giving me about 6 inches of soil on top of chicken wire ( trying to block chip munks) Lettuce grew nicely; carrots looked promising but didn't yield anything. 1) Was ground to shallow for carrots. 2) What best plants are good for this planter 3) planted string beans in pots. Started out great. All of a sudden, growth stopped and yield were 2-3 inch long, skinny beans, not enough for one meal. Was the pot an improper planter for string beans?

Dead or alive? #740951

Most of my plants look dead after the freeze. Which do you think might make it back, and what should I do for them now: dwarf meyers lemon tree about 5 years old, dwarf gardenia, Prince of Barabados, firebush, shrimp plant, and a butterfly plant. All are in pots except the lemon tree is in the ground. I had the pots in a wooden storage shed with a heater, but I forgot the heater was digital, so when the power went out, it didn't come back on with the power. That did them in. I also have a Japanese yew that is 7' tall. Many of the leaves were frozen, but there are still many leaves on different branches that are OK. How should I prune the limbs with the dead leaves? Thanks.

Newbie Grape Grower Needs Some Guidance #740230

I need some assistance in understanding how to prune some grape vines I planted inside of a framed and screened enclosed garden (10 ft high x 10 feet wide and 10 feet long). The pictures below show the 4 corners of the garden. In April 2020 I planted rootstock of three varieties of grapes: - Flame Seedless (spur prune) - Thomacord (cane prune) - Reliance (spur prune) - Two of these Am I supposed to top off the two vines on each trunk to four (4) buds or to 24 inches, or do I let them continue to grow? Everything I read says something different. Do I lop off one of the two vines or leave them both to grow?? An article I read from Oregon State University Extension service says that during the first dormant season (which we are just ending now), to choose the best shoot and cut the others to the base. However, my shoots look like they are already in their second season (maybe because I started from rootstock??). The article says that in the second growing season to "pinch off" new weak shoots when they reach 12 inches long, letting the most vigorous grow and tie them to an arbor post or trellis? Since I am growing these in the corners of the cage, do I string a wire across each corner (cattycorner) to support the spurs which will bear fruit? Thanks for any help you can provide. Arizona ash tree after 2021 freeze #740095

I live in Austin. I have a huge, mature (probably >40yrs) Arizona ash that has seemed quite healthy and looks good for the 20 years I have “owned” it. It typically buds in February and so had already budded when 2021 freeze hit. Now a month later the buds are still intact, not shedding then quickly followed by leaves as usual. Is there a chance the cycle was just interrupted and will occur later? If so, about how much delay? Thank you so much.
