Hi, my backyard apple tree is creating some apples with a hollow, rotten core. Is the unaffected apple flesh still good to eat or use in cider? Could it be rust fungus from my cedar and pear trees nearby? Thank you

2 of my arborvitae trees seem to show signs of scale. I would like an arborist to look at them and give me advice as to how to treat the trees. I hesitate to spray the trees - I have a dog, and there are 14 Calif. quail who have taken up residency in our blackberry shrubs + numerous ground feeding birds who would be effected by any pesticide usage.

Apple Maggots - Home Apple Trees #680825

I'm a home gardener in SW Portland, and I have 2 Fuji apple and 1 Asian pear tree.  All are espaliered and easy to spray thoroughly.  I've had good success with Dormant spray (sulfur or copper for scab and oil for bugs).  I also clean up leaves, fallen fruit, etc. in the fall.  However, over the past 5 years, I'm having an increasing problem with apple maggots, which appear to be in the pears as well.  I use traps for coddling moths and red sticky balls for apple maggots.  The red balls and oil dormant spray clearly aren't effective.  The attached photo shows what I'm up against.  The on-line advice is confusing, somewhat conflicting, and different chemicals are recommended by different advisors.  I'd prefer to be as organic as possible.  What do you recommend?

Tiny black vegetable-eating bugs #659197

Hi, Last year and this year I've noticed these tiny pin size black bugs on my leafy greens. They are very aggressive at eating the leaves. I only find them on more tender leafy vegetables. Can you tell me what these bugs are and how to prevent them? I've attached a picture. Would they happen to be spider mites? I don't notice any webbing around the plants. I tried spraying some neem oil on the leaves, but they still come back.

What is eating my garden? #648588

There is something eating almost all of the plants in my raised beds, as well as some of my perennials.  It is effecting- tomatoes, rhubarb, basil, dill, delphinium, watermelon, brussel sprouts, to name a few.  It is not eating my strawberries, cilantro, parsley, raspberries or blackberries.  The herbs are eaten to bare stems.  The tomatoes are effected on the lower leaves but seem to be making a comeback now that they are taller.  I tried a mild soap and water spray that didn't work.  I included some pictures of tomato leaves.

What do I do for my currant Bush that has been decimated by imported currant worms? They have literally devoured most of the leaves of a very large plant. Can I cut it back to the ground? What about eggs?

Rhododendron issue #640935

Our rhody has developed white spots on the branches. It has always had notched leaves. What is the issue? There are two identical plants on opposite sides of the concrete walk. One has leaf notching the other does not. Both have the white spotting. They are over 10 years old. We have other rhodys that do not have these issues. See photo

Any advice on products to spray on spruce trees to control Cooley Spruce Gall/Pine Tree spur??? We have several hundred spruce trees but only a few are affected.
