I have a few large ash trees and today my tree trimming man was here.  We noticed some damage to a couple of trees.  Are there any city or county organizations that provide ash beetle treatment to residents in the Northglenn, CO community?

Hi, we have recently noticed that a portion of our honey locust bark has fallen off. There is clear insect damage. I’ve included a picture of the underside of the piece of bark as well as a picture of the tree itself. Thanks for any help identifying this issue! Is this a reason for concern and if so what steps should I take to address it? Thanks!

Hi, can you tell me why my evergreen shrubs (probably boxwood- they were here before we bought the house) are making crackling sounds? Sounds sort of like pop rocks candy. It's definitely the plant, not the soil below or insects. The shrubs look a bit parched but I understand that wouldn't result in an audible-to-humans sound. Trees Not Looking Good #860388

Hi there! We bought a home in Hennepin County last year and there is a row of coniferous (spruce?) trees in our front yard that seem to be in rough shape. They have very few needles and we are noticing that some branches are starting to fall when it is windy. We are trying to figure out what to do here. Can you please help me assess if they are still alive / salvageable or need to be cut down? I do not know when they were planted.

Could you recommend hardy apple, apricot, and/or prune tree varieties for backyard growing in John Day, Oregon? Preferably dwarf, but could go up to semi-dwarf in size. If available, would like a low-maintenance variety that is pest resistant yet produces edible fruits for harvest and drying. A keeper apple variety would be fantastic if not too high maintenance! Would any of the recommended varieties need to be planted in pairs? Also - (if we are allowed more than one question! :-) ) I have a single grape (glenora) plant that has been trained around my front porch but has been infected (?) with grape leaf hoppers. Do you have a recommended prescription for knocking those little guys back if not full blown eradication? Organic if possible, or would be willing to hit it hard with something more potent if required. Thank you for any advice you can provide! Love this program!

Arborvitae Leaves Brown/Gone After Unwrapping Burlap #860320

Hello Expert,

I wrapped my Arborvitae bush with burlap in late fall, as I do every fall to prevent deer from eating the lower leaves.  Today, March 2nd, I unwrapped the burlap and the leaves that were wrapped have turned brown or are gone.  I already picked up all the fallen leaves.  What caused this?  Will it come back?  Do you recommend another method, so deer don’t eat the leaves in the winter? In the spring, summer and fall, I spray the leaves with deer repellent.  Thank you.

Could you tell me what could be causing random dirt piles in my yard? There is no obvious hole in or around the dirt piles. We had like 15 of them back in Dec 2023 and removed the piles of dirt and now again in March 2024 we have 8 more piles.

I have struggled with apple trees. I was able to determine last year that I had 3 trees with fire blight and I think they also had apple scab. I removed the branches with the dead leaves and about 2 weeks ago pruned the trees and dipped my pruning shears in Pine Sol after pruning each branch. I sprayed the trees last fall with Neem oil and again a couple days after I pruned them recently. I am now looking at what and when I should be doing next. From reading it appears that streptomycin, oxytetracycline (for fire blight) and a copper fungicide or phosphate fungicide (for apple scab). My question is what product would you recommend for the fire blight and what product for the apple scab? Is there one product that can be used to cover both problems? If not, can the two products you recommend be combined and sprayed together? With the warm weather we are having I am thinking I may need to be spraying them sometime in March. Thank you for any help you can give me. Apple trees are certainly a challenge to raise. You add the impact of deer, rabbits and mice and I am almost ready to give up

I would prefer the plants to be spreading perennial and self-seeding annuals. What are your top recommendations? Also, do you have any research on the best shape for this landscaping as it expands? We've grown mustard in our raised beds with row covers on them all winter. They are going great guns and looking good now. However, we noticed a few leaves that had this on (in?) them. See picture. At first I thought they might be insect eggs. But on further thought maybe not. First, the row covers are pretty tight and I don't think bugs have gotten in. Second, no kale in the bed. Though I like to eat it, it attracts more bugs than I want to deal with. And third, it's right along the veining and no where else. Could it maybe be a (almost) freeze when it was taking up water? Anyway, just curoious. Michaela

Backyard Peach Tree #860096

I have a mature peach tree in my backyard of the house I purchased last year. We began occupying the house in June of last year, and the tree produced a lot of peaches (100-200) which we were able to enjoy during their ripened phase in August despite several succumbing to pests and deer. As spring approaches, I plan to prune this free extensively as It has a lot of overgrowth and lacks an open canopy that is recommended for this type of tree. I also plan to add a layer of mulch at the base. However, I am fearful that this tree is past it’s prime as the base of the trunk doesn’t appear to be in good shape (see picture) and at least two of the large, scaffolded limbs are plagued by gummosis. Unfortunately, the previous owner didn’t take care of it well and I am pretty certain to pruning has happened in at least a couple years. Any recommendations on how to best prune this tree, keep pests away, and increase its life span would be much appreciated.

Any idea what is happening to my peppers? I don't understand why they are discoloring. I grew them from seeds in an indoor grow tent. I can't seem to find any information online and I've asked the Indoor Garden FB group I follow and no one knows. The white doesn't rub off. It's like they are getting bleached. I hope you can help.

Small Shrubs (boxwood?) #859988

Hello! I would love your advice on what to do with these small shrubs. I don’t think they are boxwoods - but they sure look like it, so now I’m not sure. I planted them about 15 years ago. A couple of years ago I did some significant pruning to reduce their size slightly and increase air circulation. They’re in a spot that gets almost no direct sun. The white spots on the leaves are discoloration – they do not wipe off. They’ve been like this for 2 years so I don’t think it is a boxwood blight. Is there anything I can do to help them? Thanks very much!
