Does this look like a brand new baby cockroach? I found it in my bathroom. It was about 1-2mm long, very tiny and I apologize for the poor picture quality, I had to zoom in. It looked slightly yellowish in color.

Hello, I took a picture of this little beetle on my patio. Google lens says it’s a pine beetle. We have numerous pine trees on our property and certainly don’t want them destroyed or any other trees in our area. Should we be concerned? Is there any type of preventative spray treatment?

Management of grubs in my lawn #850145

I have been battling grubs in a section of my front lawn for years. The lawn has been treated by professionals and I have  treated with products from the hardware store. The grubs still return every year. . I have removed the affected section and plan to resod the area. Any suggestions on treating the soil before I resod ?

Campfire Rose care #850095

We live in the Turnagain area in west Anchorage.  We bought a bare root campfire rose in late May and put it in a pot outside.  it did not leaf out and we planned to return it, but finally in August it developed leaves and bloomed.  It is still in the pot, blooming and pretty leggy.  Would it be better to overwinter it in the pot in a 40 degree garage or should we get it in the ground as soon as possible, or leave it in the pot outside?  And should the foliage be cut  back or just left alone?  Thank you.

pruning a very young Redbud? #850086

I saw a previous post on here about trimming (not trimming) a red bud 

I have this very young self planted red bud as you can see from the photo it has what appears to be six Long leaders I'm surprised none of them are branching off but quite literally growing about a foot from the ground and then straight out! 

Should I just leave this alone for a few years and it will branch out or do I need to do something to get it to have a canopy and what should I do with these 10 foot high shoots? support them? as u can see they are weeping over. 

would be great if someone would explain why this tree grows in this manner and when it would actually branch off?

My Kwansi ornamental cherry tree is 18 yrs old. It has gummosis which I plan on addressing but it’s leaves on top of the tree have been anemic  & more sparse than a healthy tree for the last few years. It also occasionally drops twigs. My question is : is it too far gone to save if I remove the cankers?

Does some crabgrass lie more flat than others, and can it save us? #849752

A still decent looking grassy median in an HEB parking lot, after months of intense Houston heat, had mixed grass types, St. Augustine,crabgrass and Bermuda. My question is whether there are distinct types of crabgrass, some of which lie flatter, or whether the flat appearance is from mowing only. My own lawn issue is St. Augustine Decline that never goes away and leaves my lawn pock-marked looking. A solution under consideration is to get away from mono-culture and have a well mowed, mixed lawn of St. Augustine remnants, Bermuda, and low lying crabgrass which can resemble St. Augustine in its leaves. I attach three pics of crabgrass. Comments? Crabgrass seeds anyone? A solution to our 'new summers' perhaps?

Hello,

I want to purchase about a dozen to 15 bareroot (rootstock) trees and am not finding places to order them.

I understand it should be mailed to me come spring, but I want to be prepared and get an order placed with plenty of time. 

Quantity of each: 12-15

Rootstock type: Krymsk-86 AND Geneva G.30

I've studied rootstock enough to realize these are what I want, but where to get this small quantity for shipment in the spring has stumped me (bad pun, intended!)

We are losing mature pine trees left and right up in the northern part of the county by Pearland. I have seen this in the past and it was attributed to the pine bark beetle. Is that what's happening this time or is it the severe drought that is killing our pine trees? Thanks

To: U of M Apple Experts and Entomologists: I have been bagging my apples to protect them from the apple maggot fly for the past 10+ years. I usually do this during the last two weeks in June. However, last year and again this year there were already signs of apple puncture by June 15th. Do you think the lifecycles and timing is changing? Or do you think that the extreme heat the past couple early Junes has the cycle speeded up temporarily? Are you seeing this across the state? Please let me know what you think.

I would like to ask a question. I live in Palmer Lake on 3 acres on the side of the mountain. I have given up trying to have a lawn because of water restrictions over the years. I put in 5 lawns on the first 1/2 acre to no avail. Now I have a combination of grass and weeds. I just mowed the front lawn that is fenced since the weeds were about 8 inches high and about to go to seed. I have 3 little dogs and it was almost their height. We never bagged the grass in the past but I did this time in a probably vain attempt to cut down on weeds. The rest of my yard has tall weeds due to a busted tractor. I finally have a new one, a zero turn (whoohoo!) and I am wondering if bagging the whole yard will cut down on weeds about to drop seeds. It's going to be a lot of bags! It talks of planting oats, winter rye, winter wheat, crimson clover and hairy vetch as a fall cover crop. Is this a good idea? To go along with that what are the positives? What are the negatives? Black substance in peppers - no punctures #848774

I received some peppers from a resident who wondered what the black substance is in the photos of the inside of the peppers (below) with no visible hole at the surface. Photo 3 shows a bruise on the external surface, but no puncture. Resident noted an insect with “pinchers” on the inside but she had disposed of the specimen and I did not find any specimens in other peppers. What is the black substance on the internal flesh and seeds in the pepper? What might be the cause?

I have an insect that I think is a wet termite. Is this an insect that someone can identify if I bring it in? Also we have a vine that is growing in our garden and producing what looks like a squash of some kind. Do you think you could identify if I bring in a leaf of the plant and one of the squash? Also, where is the nearest CSU extension center to Bellview and Federal Blvd.?
